Tiger Fish, Twisting Channels and Grit: A Fishing Tour through Namibia’s Wild Waters.

through Namibia’s Wild Waters.

Not every adventure in Namibia involves a game drive. Sometimes it’s a boat, a line and the untamed waters of the Okavango Panhandle that set your heart racing. For this unique Namibia tour, we swapped binoculars for fishing rods.

Some trips demand everything from you, and in return, give you back more than you’ve ever imagined. Traveling Namibia is not always smooth sailing— especially when guiding a 4-person camping safari while running a fever. But whether sick or healthy, the ‘thrill of the tiger’ makes it all worth it. This is African safari at its most personal and unpredictable, a wild chase through glistening river arms and marshlands for one of Africa’s fiercest freshwater legends: the tiger fish.

With engines humming in anticipation, the open road called us north. Our first stop:  the fascinating Waterberg.

From Waterberg to Grashoek: Layers of Landscape

At the Waterberg, sandstone cliffs stand like sentinels above the savanna. The summit is unnaturally level, like the earth paused mid-rise to set down a table. At the top, the landscape transforms into a unique version of an African forest, complete with enormous cluster leaf figs and ferns. The lush vegetation in this microclimate is a sharp contrast to the thorn savannah of the surrounding plains and a sight to behold.  We moved on to Grashoek, spending time with the Ju/’hoansi San, grounding ourselves in ancient wisdom before heading for the riverlands.

The Magic of Shakawe

When we reached Shakawe, everything changed.

Nestled in the Okavango Panhandle, right where Okavango River gathers itself before fanning out into the Delta, the waters divide into elegant arms, creating a labyrinth of intertwining channels, flooded plains, and hidden lagoons. A landscape painted in mist, birdcall and liquid light.

Mornings break with the call of fish eagles, and the river moves like silk under the golden rays of the sunrise. Climbing into our boat, we eyed the bends that held the promise of our quarry: the tiger fish.

On the Hunt for a River Legend

Now, if you’ve never heard of the tiger fish, picture this: sharp teeth, silver scales, lightning-fast strikes. It’s not just a fish—it’s a freshwater predator with attitude. Catching one isn’t easy, and that’s exactly what makes it unforgettable. Between the hippos grunting in the reeds and crocodiles sunning on the banks, we were on a fishing adventure straight out of legend.

Wild Company

Two’s company, three’s a crowd they say. Well, we were not alone. Elephants waded across channels, crocodiles slid silently beneath the surface, and hippos eyed us from the shadows with their usual grumpy suspicion. Every moment hummed with a thrill, and every cast of the line came with a heartbeat.

What They Didn’t See: The Hard Part

What the guests didn’t know, at least not at first, was that by Day 5 I was seriously sick. Not the sniffles kind of sick—the kind that usually sends people to bed. But there was no time for rest. It was a four-person camping tour, and I was the only guide. Every morning and afternoon, I led the fishing excursions. I cooked. I prepped. I patched gear. I smiled through the fever.

Because when you're in the middle of nowhere, logistics don’t wait for you to recover.

And when the guests finally flew out from Katima, the tour complete, I still had a 1400 km drive solo back to Windhoek. Still sick. Still standing. Because, for our visitors, there is no distance we won’t go, so others can discover the magic we’ve always known.

Lessons in Grit and Grace

This tour taught me that African logistics are no joke. Guiding, fishing, cooking, hosting, and navigating all at once takes a toll, especially when you’re running on empty. But also, that there’s strength in doing what needs to be done. That sometimes, the most unforgettable part of the journey isn’t a destination—it’s the resilience you didn’t know you had until it was demanded.

Looking Back

In the end, it was worth it. The magic of Shakawe, the flash of silver beneath the water, the laughter around the fire at night— all of it lingers. And even in exhaustion, there’s pride. Because we pulled it off. The guests left with unforgettable stories. And I came back with one too.

If you're ready for a journey that challenges and changes you, one cast at a time—join us next time on the river.
