GHOSTLY REMAINS AND SHIFTING SANDS
Formed by the Tsauchab River, Deadvlei used to be a marsh about 1000 year ago. The Afrikaans word "vlei" meaning "marshy and/or low lying area where water collects. This marsh dried up as the Tsauchabs waters were diverted over time. This left the trees without the life giving water they required. The sand dunes you see today slowly encroached over time after the drying of the marsh. Creating a protective barrier against the elements. Preserving the trees in the state they are today. Deadvlei attracts many travelers to Namibia. Drawn to its desolation and eerie atmosphere.
